Content and Language Objectives
As teachers we are all familiar with content and language objectives, but I am noticing that many teachers still do not write the language objective correctly. They are correct when writing a content objective for their content, but the language objective is a struggle. We need to remember that writing a language objective is a way to help the student use academic language in the classroom. One of the important things to remember when writing objectives is to make them student friendly.
When writing language objectives you need to look at the language function-Why are the students talking? What is the purpose? How are students expected to use language? (Think process vocabulary or Bloom's Verbs---Describe, Explain, Persuade)
Then we need to look at the language structure-What do you expect students to say? (Sentence Frames, Cloze Frames, Key Words, Vocabulary, Mini Grammar Lessons)
