Summarizing and note taking do not just have to be paper pencil. Andrew Kerr from McRel has a lot of great resources on his diigo library. Check them out at: https://www.diigo.com/list/learningcurrents/summarizing-and-notetaking
Summarizing
We know that summarizing and note taking are very difficult for students to do. Many times it is assumed that they know how to do both, especially when they get to high school, but the truth is most have never been taught. They need to be taught explicitly.
Teach rule based summarizing.
1. Take out unimportant information.
2. Take out repetitive words.
3. Replace a list with a descriptive word.
4. Find a topic sentence or write your own.
Using summarizing frames is a good way to help get them started.

I like to use the following for some of my summarizing:
(Somebody)______________________
wanted _________________________
but _____________________________
so ______________________________
finally ___________________________
If you have a CITW book (Classroom Instruction That Works) you will find frames/questions in the summarizing/notetaking section of the book.
Two sites that are helpful when summarizing to either provide feedback or visualizations along with the summary:
Text compactor http://textcompactor.com
Ultimate Research Assistant http://ultimate-research-assistant.com

Notetaking
1. Give teacher prepared notes-use a graphic organizer so they only need to fill in key points.
2. Remind them that notes are not verbatim
3. Used as study guides
4. Teach organization
Notetaking can be formal outlining, webbing, or combination notes. Pictographs or illustrations can also be a form of note taking.
Resources for note taking are at the top of the page, but you can also use things like PBWorks, Google Docs, Evernote, A.nnotate, and PrimaryPad.
